Katha

The tradition of expounding the outer and inner meanings of Gurbani (katha) has been an integral part of the Sikh tradition since its very beginning with Guru Nanak. Later on it was again emphasized in the last injunction of Guru Gobind Singh when the Guru ordered his Sikhs to Khoj (research) the shabad, both academically but even more importantly it was to be understood mystically. Bhai Nand Lal was himself appointed by the Guru to do katha for the many sangats that arrived in Anandpur from near and far and since the 18th century various gianis of the Sikh tradition have adopted the writings of Bhai Nand Lal as commentaries of the Guru Granth Sahib. The emphasis on katha, going hand in hand with kirtan, was specifically mentioned by Guru Gobind Singh in the prashan uttar rehitnama of Bhai Nand Lal where the Guru says that Sikhs are to include katha and kirtan as a part of their daily rehit.

On this page we have collected a few katha and educational videos on Bhai Nand Lal in English and Punjabi.
